Kisangani’s main bridge reopens

Tshopo bridge in Kisangani has been reopened to the public, according to humanitarian agencies. “Tshopo bridge was reopened at 15:00 hours [on Wednesday] after a successful demining operation carried out by RCD [Rassemblement congolais pour la democratie] police forces,” a humanitarian source told IRIN. The source added that commercial traffic and population movement on the Kisangani-Buta axis resumed immediately. Rwanda denied Ugandan accusations that it was responsible for planting the mines. The bridge was the scene of very heavy fighting between the two countries’ armies earlier this month.
