Belligerents in New York for talks

Representatives of all parties in the DRC war began talks on Thursday which are likely to decide the future of UN’s involvement in Congo. “The meeting is very important for everybody because we shall take stock of the implementation of the Lusaka agreement, and correct where we have gone wrong,” foreign affairs minister in the Rwandan backed RCD-Goma, Adolphe Onusumba, told IRIN on Wednesday. “The meeting also comes at a time when there is a proposal to impose sanctions on key players in the DRC war, so there is a lot to do,” he said. The two-day meeting is being hosted by the UN Security Council and brings together members of the political committee set up under the Lusaka agreement. In the report to the Council’s meeting on Tuesday, UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan said the meeting was “a welcome chance for all the parties to undertake a serious re-evaluation of the deteriorating situation in DRC”. The Council is scheduled to adopt a new resolution on DRC when the meeting ends on Friday.
