US condemns government for rejecting Masire

The US on Tuesday accused the DRC government of obstructing the peace process and not honouring its commitments to the Lusaka peace accord signed last year. “The United States is deeply concerned by the efforts of the Congolese government to obstruct the implementation of the dialogue,” a US State Department statement said, according to Reuters. “These actions are distinctly unhelpful and are clear violations of the commitments the government made when it signed the Lusaka agreement.” The statement added that rejection of the inter-Congolese dialogue would only prolong the war in Congo and the suffering of the people. The condemnation follows the DRC’s rejection talks facilitator, former Botswanan president Ketumile Masire.
