Some 40,000 families to be allocated swamp land

Some 40,000 families in the Kigali urban and rural prefectures are to occupy the Kagera swamp area for cultivation, the Rwanda News Agency (RNA) reported. It quoted the director of agriculture in charge of Kigali, August Habimana, as saying that his department had already cleared about 1,000 hectares of the Kagera swamp in preparation for allocation to the families. Each family will get 25 acres of land, he said. Habimana said there was a possibility of establishing water canals in the area in order to direct water to gardens. He said lack of funds and reliable transport and communication at the prefecture level, had affected the proper coordination of activities between the department and people in the area.
