Bemba denies capturing new positions

The leader of the Uganda-backed Mouvement de liberation du Congo (MLC), Jean-Pierre Bemba, has denied accusations by the DRC government that he has captured new positions, despite signing the Lusaka agreement. “[DRC President] Kabila is just dreaming, the positions we occupy were declared to the JMC,” he told IRIN. Bemba claimed Kabila’s troops had been attacking MLC positions. “He should not mistake the reluctance to take over Mbandaka [in the west] as lack of capacity on our part, it is due to respect for the Lusaka agreement,” Bemba added. The DRC government army on Monday gave the MLC three days to leave positions it is said to have captured.
