Political committee makes key decisions

The political committee set up to facilitate implementation of the Lusaka agreement met last week and made “key decisions”, officials said. Ugandan minister Amama Mbabazi who chairs the committee said “tremendous progress” was made. “For example, all parties declared their willingness to release prisoners of war,” he told IRIN. “The meeting also considered and adopted mechanisms for disarmament, demobilisation, and of course we prepared for the meeting with the UN Security Council in New York.” A diplomatic source told IRIN that the Joint Military Commission (JMC), the implementing body of the Lusaka agreement, wanted to coordinate the release of prisoners of war and set 1 July as the release date, with Zambia as the venue.
