UN seeks donor support for Djibouti peace talks

Following discussions with the Djibouti government, the UN has produced a report to present to donors on ways in which they can give financial support to the ongoing Somali peace talks, UN sources told IRIN on Monday. The Djibouti government is hosting about 700 Somalis in Arta, where a peace conference is expected to continue for at least another month. The original timetable has been made flexible to allow traditional elders, clan representatives and civil society members to choose delegates and fully debate issues, in the hope that agreement can eventually be reached on establishing a central government and parliament in Somalia. During previous peace talks, notably in Ethiopia, Somali representatives have complained that financial pressure on host governments have resulted in there being insufficient time to debate issues fully.
