OAU gives ECOWAS US $300,000

OAU Secretary-General Salim Ahmed Salim announced on Wednesday a US $300,000-dollar contribution to help ECOWAS deploy military observers at the land and coastal borders of Liberia and Guinea, PANA reported. Both states are members of the three-nation Mano River Union (MRU), which accuse each other of harbouring dissidents in their territories. Sierra Leone is the other member. Salim, concerned by the possibility of a wider regional conflict, appealed to the belligerents for maximum restraint and to co-operate with the Economic Community of West African States in its efforts to defuse the crisis.
