Opposition member suspended for “defying” party

The leader of the opposition Rassemblement democratique centrafricain (RDC), former President Andre Kolingba, has suspended an RDC member, reportedly for voting against a recent RDC-supported parliamentary motion of censure against the government. Diplomatic sources in Bangui informed IRIN that National Assembly member Jacob Gbeti was suspended from the RDC for a period of three months, after which a final decision on his party membership will be taken. Gbeti is one of 20 RDC members serving in the Assembly. Regional analysts say Gbeti’s suspension has cast doubts on the freedom of opposition legislators to vote freely.
