Ghana’s ruling national Democratic Congress has said it is only partially satisfied with the registration of voters for December’s presidential election but that it will not demand a general extension of the registration, state-owned Ghana Broadcasting Corporation (GBC) reported on Tuesday.
Party Propaganda Secretary George Quainoo-Mettle told the broadcaster there had been a shortage of registration material and other lapses. However, he said, an extension of the registration period should only be granted in specific areas.
“We believe that areas that have not been really covered are the ones that should have an extension,” he said, such as some rural districts that are not easily reached due to poor communications.
The Electoral Commission announced the official end of registration on Monday. Its deputy chairman, David Kangah, told GBC the commission had taken careful note of the requests to extend the registration period but did not anticipate any change in its election programmes.
