Cassava programme to benefit 35 million people

Some 35 million people from among Nigeria’s poorest rural households are to benefit from a US $36.09-million root and tuber expansion programme. According to an announcement by the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD), 25 states in the middle, southwest and southeast parts of the country will be assisted by the programme, which aims to improve cassava, yam and potato varieties. Since women play a major role in the production, processing and marketing of cassava and other food crops, the programme will focus particularly on their needs, IFAD said.
