Police kill student

Police on Tuesday shot and killed a 23-year-old exchange student from Lesotho when they fired rubber bullets at about 100 protesting students at the University of Durban-Westville in the KwaZulu-Natal province, media reports said. The shooting occurred after the university was closed following protests by students against the expulsion of more than 500 students who failed to pay their registration fees. The university authorities reportedly called in the police to remove the students from the closed campus, located on the outskirts of the port city of Durban. The student died after a rubber bullet penetrated his chest. Two other students were arrested on charges of malicious damage to property.
