New alarm at spread of HIV/AIDS

The international consultancy, Abt Associates of South Africa has reported that over 60 percent of new HIV infections in South Africa occur in young people aged 15 to 25, with teenage girls and young women of childbearing age hardest hit by the epidemic. It said that among young, HIV-infected people, half were expected to die before the age of 35. “We are looking at another lost generation,” said the director of the study, Malcolm Steinberg. South Africa currently ranks eighth in the world among countries with the highest HIV-infection rates.
