Ugandan “units” monitoring border, as precaution

The Ugandan government has denied media reports that it deployed troops on its border with Rwanda. “Contrary to the information circulating both in the print and electronic media...the Ministry of Defence would like to categorically state that there is no amassing of Ugandan troops on the common border with Rwanda,” Minister of State for Defence Steven Kavuma said in a statement, received by IRIN on Thursday. “However, we have small units acting as screens to monitor the border for precautionary reasons,” he stated. The statement also said available information pointed to a “heavy” deployment of Rwandan troops on the common border. “We are watching the situation closely. We express our concern over this development but continue to exercise maximum restraint. We urge our brothers and sisters in Rwanda to do the same in the interest of peace in the region,” the statement added.
