Toll road to open in June

The N4 toll road linking South Africa and Mozambique is expected to open in June despite extensive damage due to flooding, Trans African Concessions said on Thursday. TRAC chief executive officer Trevor Jackson said the N4 was expected to reduce delays at the Komatipoort border, where trucks often had to wait several hours, and cut back on vehicle maintenance caused by the poor roads. Jackson said there was an urgent need for the government to upgrade the Komatipoort border post. “Upgrading the border post to a one-stop facility will act as a significant draw card to cross-border traffic from many industries such as import/export and tourism,” Jackson said. “The overall success of the Maputo Development Corridor hinges on an efficient, world-class border facility between South Africa and Mozambique he added. Sections of the road were opened to traffic during the Mozambique floods because other roads were damaged and at one stage it was the only route to Maputo.
