Sierra Leoneans seek safer areas

UNHCR has reported that 149 Sierra Leoneans crossed over into Guinea on Thursday, Fred Eckhard, spokesman of the UN Secretary-General, told journalists in New York on Monday. Some of the refugees said many other people were ready to go to Guinea but were being stopped by Revolutionary United Front (RUF) rebels on the Sierra Leonean side, Eckhard added. He said UNHCR staff had been deployed to the border areas to monitor new arrivals and that people were also reported to be on the move in the Masiaka area, east of Freetown.
