UK consolidates development links

The formal opening on Monday by British Secretary of State for International Development Clare Short of a Rwandan office of DFID (the Department for International Development) during a three-day visit to the country was an important milestone in the UK’s deepening development partnership with Rwanda, a ministry press release stated. The Kigali office, established in November, would play a key role in supporting DFID’s development activities in Rwanda and would be strengthened further with the recruitment of social development and governance staff as the UK’s bilateral programme in Rwanda expanded, DFID stated. The office was intended to proved “a clear and distinct DFID presence in Rwanda,” and to facilitate peace and security, reconciliation, economic growth and inclusive government through Britain’s development assistance programme, it said. The Kigali support office would also help DFID monitor humanitarian efforts in neighbouring Burundi, the DFID statement added.
