US scraps sanctions

The United States has lifted sanctions it had imposed on Niger in reaction to the coup of 9 April 1999 that killed then president Ibrahim Mainassara, State Department spokesman James Rubin announced on Tuesday. Rubin said in a statement that Secretary of State Madeleine Albright had signed a declaration on 23 February to the effect that since Niger now has a democratically elected government, assistance to the country is no longer prohibited under US law. “This action removes sanctions against the Government of Niger, permitting the restoration of direct bilateral assistance,” Rubin said.
