Muluzi names new cabinet

Malawian President Bakili Muluzi on Wednesday announced a new cabinet after dissolving the previous one on Saturday, media reports said. The only new face is finance minister Matthews Chikaonda. Most of the former ministers switched portfolios. He also appointed eight deputy ministers. Muluzi dissolved his eight-month-old cabinet after some of them were implicated in allegations of bribery and corruption. Muluzi had been expected to drop some ministers and reduce the 30-member cabinet. However, he reportedly did neither, but retained his cabinet at 30 members, with 22 ministers and eight deputy ministers.
