CARE announces primary school enrolment project

The US-based relief and development organisation CARE announced on Tuesday the start of a project to increase primary school enrolment for girls in Benin. It said in Benin, only one quarter of women over 15 years can read and write compared with nearly half the men. The two-year project, funded by USAID, will focus on improving girls’ education in 70 primary schools around Borgou, northern Benin. It aims to increase access to education for some 11,000 students, focusing on girls who traditionally do not remain in schools and will educate communities on the importance of basic education for both daughters and sons. The project also aims to improve the performance of girls at school through a tutoring programme in which some will receive extra help from their teachers.
