Genet Ragassa fled violence in Ethiopia’s Somali region after her parents were killed. She spent several years in refugee camps in South Sudan and Namibia, before arriving in South Africa in 2009.
As Hallen, the youngest of her four children, plays with her travel documents, Ragassa speaks softly. “You feel fear [in South Africa], especially when you talk a different language... When we talk this English, we are looked at as strange at the train station. I can’t talk in South Africa,” she says. (Guy Oliver/TNH) - Themes Migration
