Congolese refugee Solange Mambuyne, 48, arrived in South Africa in 2006 after seven years in Namibia’s Osire refugee camp. She says her overriding experience of South Africa is one of “fear”. Within a few months of arriving in Johannesburg, her livelihood was sabotaged when thieves stole her sewing machine donated by a South African well-wisher. “They beat me like a dog. I was screaming. They said: ‘If you scream, no one is going to come to the door’. I go to the police and say I know the stealers, [they say]: ‘What is it that we can do? We can’t do an investigation for you’.”
