Occupational therapist Noor Al-Khatib teaches a patient how to tie his shoelaces with only one hand [also video]. This patient, a Jordanian boy, had a congenital problem with his left hand. The MSF 3D project serves refugees and Jordanians alike.
“We are not doing the prosthesis and giving to the patient, and after that going home”, project manager Ismail says. Specific patient needs take first place: a patient’s goal may be to wash themselves, tie shoelaces or tie up hair. Occupational therapists can then coach the patient to achieve the most with the prosthesis they have.
The project has adjusted based on patient feedback – one boy’s forearm snapped in a fall at school: result later models were made more robust.
