US names global AIDS programme director

    JOHANNESBURG

    US President George W Bush has named a director for his US $15 billion global AIDS programme, the New York Times reported on Thursday.

    Bush signed an HIV/AIDS plan to tackle HIV/AIDS in 14 African countries and the Caribbean into law five weeks ago.

    Earlier this week Randall Tobias, the former chief executive officer of pharmaceutical giant, Eli Lilly and Company, was elected to coordinate all US international HIV/AIDS activities.

    Bush said Tobias would set up a broad network to deliver drugs to the farthest reaches of Africa, "even by motorcycle or bicycle" and would help train health care professionals to treat people living with HIV/AIDS.

    "Randy Tobias has a mandate directly from me to get our AIDS initiative up and running as soon as possible," Bush added.
