Health Minister examines AIDS treatment hurdles

South African Health Minister Manto Tshabalala-Msimang is in Washington to find ways of increasing access to HIV/AIDS prevention, treatment and care. The minister was invited as a member of the UN Global Steering Committee, which has been mandated to identify key obstacles blocking the scaling-up of anti-AIDS programmes in countries hard hit by the pandemic. In a statement Tshabalala-Msimang said, "We have to ensure that the world responds in a comprehensive manner, emphasising the centrality of prevention and equitable access to quality treatment, care and support." She added that South Africa's participation in shaping the global response to AIDS was vital.
