The World Health Organisation (WHO) on Tuesday said it will focus on malaria and HIV/AIDS in Africa by increasing the budget by 30 percent over the next two years, bringing the agency's total contribution for the period to almost US $950 million.
WHO Director-General Lee Jong-wook told his agency's Africa regional meeting in the Mozambican capital, Maputo, that the funds would be used to target "emerging areas of global concern", including epidemic alerts and responses, surveillance, and prevention and management of chronic non-communicable diseases.
Sub-Saharan Africa is home to more than 60 percent of people thought to be living with HIV/AIDS globally.
