Australia ups its Global Fund contributions

Australia announced a further contribution of US $5 million this week to the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria. The pledge was made by Australian Minister of Foreign Affairs, Alexander Downer, at an international conference on AIDS in Asia and the Pacific, in Kobe, Japan. He said his country was taking an active role in the meeting and would be sponsoring more than 50 participants from developing countries, as well as supporting workshops and meetings for people living with HIV/AIDS. Australia's Sydney Morning Herald quoted Downer as saying, "This follows the $15 million announced earlier this month, as part of our $75 million commitment to the Global Fund."
