Japan pledges additional funds for global infectious diseases

Japan's Prime Minister, Junichiro Koizumi, said on Thursday his country would pledge an additional US $500 million to the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria. Koizumi's announcement was made ahead of the 6 to 8 July meeting of G8 leaders in Gleneagles, Scotland, where aid for Africa is expected to take centre stage. The Associated Press quoted Koizumi as saying, "We cannot tolerate a situation in which one person is killed every five seconds somewhere in the world by these three killer diseases." Earlier this month Japan also announced plans to spend $5 billion over the next five years on healthcare and disease prevention in poor countries, mainly in Africa.
