Billions of AIDS dollars needed - UNAIDS

UNAIDS estimates that more than US $20 billion will be required to tackle HIV/AIDS in developing nations over the next three years. The executive director, Peter Piot, said although the agency had succeeded in mobilising funds, pledges still fell far short of the US $22 billion needed to fund programmes until 2008. In a statement on Wednesday Piot said: "AIDS poses an exceptional threat to humanity and the response needs to be equally exceptional." The funds will be directed towards comprehensive HIV prevention, antiretroviral treatment for 6.6 million people across the globe, and supporting orphans in sub-Saharan Africa.
