Drug giant joins search for AIDS vaccine

Multinational drug manufacturer GlaxoSmithKline (GSK) has joined the search for an HIV vaccine, with a promise to make an effective product affordable to developing nations. The company announced on Tuesday that it was setting up a joint research team with the International AIDS Vaccine Initiative in the first public-private partnership involving a major pharmaceutical company. Jean Stephenne, the president of GSK Biological, the company's vaccines arm, said in a statement, "The private sector has an immense amount of knowledge, resources and expertise; innovative partnerships such as this are essential to tackle the biggest global health challenges."
