EU ups its support of AIDS, TB and malaria

The European Commission this week adopted a programme of action to strengthen its support of HIV/AIDS, tuberculosis (TB) and malaria in African and Asian countries.

The 'Programme for Action: Accelerated Action on HIV/AIDS, Malaria and Tuberculosis in the Context of Poverty Reduction' proposed that European Union (EU) governments agree to help fill the financing gap for the three diseases during their 2007-2013 budgetary discussions.

EU Development Commissioner Louis Michel was quoted by the Associated Press as saying: "HIV/AIDS, malaria and TB are the main killer diseases in many countries of sub-Saharan Africa and Asia, and are also a major obstacle for development."

The UN estimates that the "financing gap" for the three diseases will reach US $14.9 billion annually by 2007.
