The US President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR) achieved "unprecedented success" during 2004, according to the government's first annual progress report.
Proposed by President George W Bush in January 2003, PEPFAR is a $15 billion campaign to tackle HIV/AIDS in African and Caribbean countries.
Titled, 'Engendering Bold Leadership', the report says anti-AIDS treatment programmes reached more than 150,000 people in the first months after they were initiated in June last year.
"The United States’ rapid and strategically targeted deployment of resources has led to remarkable results," the document reads.
