HIV/AIDS threatening to destroy governance - UN

HIV/AIDS is undercutting improvements in governance made by Africa, according to the head of the UN Economic Commission for Africa (ECA). KY Amoako, the ECA Executive Secretary, told a gathering at UN Headquarters in New York on Wednesday that the pandemic was already killing members of some professions faster than their replacements could be trained. He said health systems were also collapsing as nurses died, and some national military forces had a 30 to 40 percent HIV prevalence rate. Amoako warned that unless Africans could build the capacity of the continent to sustain many areas of government, the governance agenda could be reversed.
