Poor AIDS treatment plan among world's best - President

During his annual state of the nation address on Friday, South African President Thabo Mbeki said the government was stepping up its fight against HIV and AIDS. Agence France-Presse quoted Mbeki as saying: "With regard to AIDS in particular, the government's comprehensive plan, which is among the best in the world - combining awareness, treatment and home-based care - is being implemented with greater vigour." However, the government's target of having 53,000 people on free anti-AIDS drugs at 113 state-accredited health centres by March this year has not been met. According to the local AIDS activist group, Treatment Action Campaign, only about 20,000 people are currently accessing the free treatment.
