US president chided for reproductive and AIDS policies

US Senator Hillary Clinton has criticised President George W. Bush's policies on HIV prevention and access to reproductive health services in developing countries.

She said the Bush administration placed too much emphasis on abstinence in tackling HIV/AIDS, and was restricting women's access to reproductive health services by cutting funding to organisations providing abortions or advocating their legalisation.

Although the administration supports the 'ABC' policy of AIDS prevention - Abstinence, Being faithful and Condom use - the main focus has been on abstinence rather than contraceptives.

Reuters quoted Clinton as saying: "ABC is a good strategy, but it has three parts to it, and we need to remind the administration of that."
