Cabinet to examine AIDS drug programme success

South African Health Minister Manto Tshabalala-Msimang will release a full report to cabinet on her comprehensive HIV/AIDS plan on Thursday. This follows an eight-month legal battle between the health department and the AIDS lobby group, Treatment Action Campaign (TAC), in which TAC lambasted the government for its "very slow" AIDS drug rollout. Of the estimated half a million people requiring treatment in 2003, only 15,000 currently have access to free drugs. According to the South African Broadcasting Corporation, the report is expected to include statistics on the progress of the government's anti-AIDS treatment programme since its launch in April this year.
