Shock AIDS rates among married people

The rate of HIV/AIDS among married couples in South Africa is "horrifyingly" high compared to global figures, a recent study suggests. The joint research by the Human Sciences Research Council (HSRC) and the University of Pennsylvania in the US found a prevalence rate of 10.5 percent among the 6,000 married respondents, in contrast to 15.7 percent of unmarried participants, according to a local newspaper, Die Burger. The study said although extra-marital sex for women was generally taboo, the same did not apply to men, and recommended that married couples take part in AIDS-prevention campaigns and undergo HIV testing.
