Media companies to meet with Annan on HIV/AIDS

Major global news and entertainment organisations will meet at the UN Headquarters in New York on Thursday to discuss how the media can contribute to the fight against HIV/AIDS. According to a UN statement, the "Global Media AIDS Initiative", hosted by Secretary-General Kofi Annan, will explore ways in which the industry can create long-lasting public education campaigns and build greater media participation. UNAIDS Executive Director Peter Piot, co-chair of the event, will describe the challenges posed by the HIV/AIDS pandemic. UNAIDS estimates that each day 8,000 people across the globe die from HIV/AIDS-related illnesses, while 14,000 new infections are reported daily.
