South African AIDS activists on Monday gathered outside the Khayelitsha Magistrate's Court in Cape Town for the appearance of three suspects accused of the rape and murder of one of their colleagues.
The Treatment Action Campaign's (TAC) Lorna Mlofana was beaten to death in a pub toilet after being raped by five men in December. She was murdered after allegedly informing the men of her HIV-positive status.
TAC national secretary, Mandla Majola was quoted by the South African Press Association as saying: "We are angry with what has happened and want the court to refuse bail... [we] want to pass the message to Khayelitsha and surrounding areas that such acts will not be tolerated."
The case has been remanded until Thursday for a formal bail application.
