After concluding his recent four-nation African tour on HIV/AIDS awareness, US health secretary Tommy Thompson said he was optimistic that resources would pour in from big businesses in the next couple of years.
Thompson told reporters in Uganda: "From what we have learned there is no question in my mind that those resources are going to come, and come very fast."
Nine firms have already pledged to use their resources in the developing countries where they operate, although there are no details of how much they plan to invest.
"We expect to make tremendous progress in 12 to 18 months, Thompson confirmed. "This trip has been a 10, on a scale of one to 10. Everyone has come away with a new perspective on the problem."
