Accelerated funding on global AIDS

    The European Union (EU) recently moved to step up its commitment to the Global Fund to Fight HIV/AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria.

    The EU's decision to donate an additional US $198.2 million to the Fund raises Western Europe's contribution to 55 percent of the Fund's current $4.7 billion.

    EU commissioner for development and humanitarian Aid, Poul Nielson, said in a statement: "These killer diseases deserve our full attention. Far too many lives are lost to AIDS, malaria and tuberculosis."

    He said the EU's original pledge of $530 million from 2003 to 2006 was also expected to be disbursed more quickly.

    Nielson commented: "The personal suffering and the threat to development caused by these epidemics demand that we act on a global scale. This is why our disbursement is being speeded up."
