Government to receive AIDS treatment report

The South African Ministry of Health was to receive a report on Tuesday detailing an operational plan for the national rollout of HIV/AIDS drugs, the South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC) has reported. This follows a September deadline given to the ministry by the cabinet for the urgent development of an operational treatment programme for all people living with HIV/AIDS. A task team of local and international experts, including members the Clinton Foundation's AIDS Initiative, was recently appointed to work on the plan and make initial assessments. The team has looked at specific issues such as human resource capacity and training, the procurement and production of medication, laboratory services and other support systems for the programme. An earlier report by the Joint Health and Treasury Task Team found that the introduction of HIV/AIDS drug therapy in the public health sector could save the lives of more than 1.7 million people between 2003 and 2010.
