Continent gets new HIV/AIDS initiative

A new commission to be launched within days will tackle the effects of HIV/AIDS in Africa, the UN Economic Commission for Africa (ECA) announced on Sunday. The ECA said in a statement that the new HIV/AIDS commission would attempt to soften the socioeconomic impact of the pandemic in African states. "The new HIV/AIDS commission, to be officially launched on Wednesday by former Zambian president Kenneth Kaunda at Africa Hall in Addis Ababa, is an African initiative formulated at the regional level by ECA, with the support of UN agencies," ECA said. The initiative was set up by UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan in February 2002, and its activities will involve developing more relevant policies and programmes, based on the relationships between HIV/AIDS and the capacity of African states to maintain economic, social and political stability.
