Former president welcomes AIDS drug plan

South Africa's Nelson Mandela Foundation has welcomed the recent U-turn by the government on the roll out of HIV/AIDS drugs, the local Sunday Times newspaper reported. Following a day-long special cabinet meeting at the weekend, the government said it had given Health Minister Manto Tshabalala-Msimang until the end of September to develop a detailed operational plan. The Foundation chairman, Jakes Gerwel, said Mandela, who had criticised the long delay in rolling out the drugs, was "overjoyed" by the government announcement. Gerwel described the government's directive as "great news" for the country's millions of people living with HIV/AIDS.
