Trade unions in Mozambique have been urged to become actively involved in the struggle against HIV/AIDS, Agencia de Informacao de Mocambique (AIM) reported on Thursday.
Labour Minister Adelaide Amurane said this was vital, as recent government efforts to bring about socioeconomic development had been jeopardised by HIV/AIDS.
"The country cannot continue losing its workers. All, including the trade unions, should commit to tackling the AIDS pandemic," Amurane said.
The International Labour Organisation (IOL) has estimated a 10 percent to 22 percent decline in the work force by 2020 in African countries with an HIV/AIDS prevalence rate of higher than 10 percent.
Research shows that 13 percent of adults between the age of 15 to 49 in Mozambique are living with HIV/AIDS.
