Africa's new leader in AIDS drug supply

Uganda could have the highest number of people accessing HIV/AIDS drugs in Africa by 2004, the UN Special Envoy for HIV/AIDS in Africa, Stephen Lewis, has said. Lewis said Ugnada's impressive proposal to the Global AIDS Fund could secure the country all of a US $122 million for HIV/AIDS care and treatment. According to administrators from the country's Joint Clinical Research Centre (JCRC), the move could boost the number of people accessing the drugs in Uganda from 15,000 to around 60,000. JCRC currently sells a monthly dosage of antiretrovirals at US $23, while it costs $36 in other parts of the country. Lewis said in a statement: "Everywhere the demand for treatment is palpable. People used to demand food, now it is for treatment. Prevention is improved when treatment is availed. I cannot emphasise enough how important that is."
