AIDS action for world's poor - Mandela

Former South African President Nelson Mandela on Monday called for more action on HIV/AIDS in the developing world. Addressing delegates at an international AIDS conference in Paris, France, Mandela called the unavailability of affordable treatment a "veritable travesty of human rights on a global scale". It is estimated that 95 percent of the 45 million people living with HIV/AIDS globally are residents of developing countries. Mandela was quoted by the Associated Press (AP) as saying: "These numbers are appalling. In fact, they are incomprehensible. According to all the experts, we are facing the worst health crisis in history." Some 5,000 researchers, scientists and medical personnel from 120 countries are attending the four-day conference, which opened on Sunday.
