UN targets HIV-positive Rwandans

    JOHANNESBURG
    The UN World Food Programme (WFP) on Thursday said it was running 39 projects in partnership with the Rwandan Ministry of Local Government for people living with, or affected by, HIV/AIDS. It is estimated that 8.9 percent of the country's adults between the ages of 15 and 49 are living with HIV/AIDS. "Food assistance is essential in the fight against HIV/AIDS. Ensuring that people living with HIV/AIDS in hunger-afflicted areas receive food assistance is one of our main priorities," WFP country representative, David Stevenson, told the UN news service PlusNews. Stevenson added that food aid not only helped to prolong the lives of people in these circumstances, but also allowed them to continue earning an income and feeding their families.
