Hospital head braves AIDS vaccine trials

A South African hospital boss has volunteered for the country's upcoming HIV/AIDS vaccine trials, local newspaper The Star reported on Friday. The Medicines Control Council (MCC) recently approved the country's first vaccine human trials against the predominantly southern African subtype-C HIV strain. Dr Reg Broekmann, Chief executive of Soweto's Chris Hani Baragwanath Hospital, could receive the first of three injections as early as August or September. "AIDS is one of the biggest health problems the country is facing and I think we've all got to do what we can to protect the people," Broekmann said. South Africa's AIDS Vaccine Initiative (SAAVI) said the trial would involve a total of 96 participants from South Africa as well as the US.
