Possible HIV/AIDS vaccine on SA horizon

The first trials of an HIV/AIDS vaccine could soon get under way in South Africa, local newspaper The Star reported on Monday. However, the University of Cape Town's (UCT) vaccine research team were modest about their achievement. "We are part of a global initiative to find a vaccine. You can't do it alone; we are not trying to do it alone," team leader, Prof Anna-Lise Williamson, said. Williamson also said the DNA-MVA combination vaccine was regarded as among one of the more promising in the world. Three HIV/AIDS vaccines have been developed by the UCT team for inclusion in a multi-dose approach.
